Sister

I am the youngest of four children. I have two older brothers who are 12 and 11 years older and my sister who is 6 years older than me. I was a surprise package. The child of my mother’s older years.

By the time I came along my mom was a busy gal helping to support and raise 4 children. So many times my main caregiver ended up being my sister. She was my mini-mom. She made sure I was up and dressed for school and she did my hair practically every morning and on special photo days at school. Looking back on some of these pictures I think OMG what was she thinking! Thank God I was too oblivious to fashion back then or I would have been scarred for life. I have curly hair which isn’t the easiest to work with so she did her best. But often I arrived at school with my bangs parted, slicked on either side of my forehead with pin curls at the end. I thought it was romantic like a flapper girl from the roaring 20's, but when you look at the pictures… I really looked more like Shemp from The Three Stooges.

Sorry I included this picture, but it best represents what my hair looked like.

All is forgiven now and I actually think I was one lucky little sister to have an older sister who took the time to make sure I was presentable. Though I do question her sense of hairstyle back then. We now live on opposite ends of the continent, and I miss her terribly. She still plays mother hen to me, reading me the riot act if I’m not taking care of myself the way I should. And she tells me how to dress and that I’m in a Fashion Coma. She has become quite the Fashion Queen. And when it comes to makeup, no one can equal her ability to tell you what colors look best on you and how you should apply them. But there is one thing I’ll never let her do: and that’s my hair! I guess I am scarred.

I love you Sis.

What a precious story! I have curly hair, too, and my pictures from childhood are also awful. Before the invention of blowdryers and straighteners OR the easy curl gel products, curly hair just tended to look fuzzy or unnaturally slicked down! No one can ever understand when I say I used to HATE my hair (until they see my pictures)! he he Lots of love, Pam

Nancy, that was a lovely memory of you and your sister. I am sure that sisters share a special bond and even though I am blessed with a brother, I do have many sister like cousins and an amazing SIL who is like a sister to me.

Nancy,
What nice memories of your sister and how loving of her to try to get your look "just right".
You are so fortunate to have curly hair, I would love to have some body in my hair.
The picture of the Stooge made me giggle out loud, wonder what kind of shoes he's wearing...
Happy weekend, curly girl!

Nancy,
What a lovely story about sisterly love. It sounds like your sister was very special. My sister and I both had incredibly thick and curly hair which, when loose, looked very like James's 1st in those amazing portraits...haha! My poor mother had the unenviable task of trying to tame our locks into tight ringlets which bounced and jiggled at every movement :>)
Thank goodness for old family photos :>)
Hugs, Angela

So adorable...I've always wanted a sister. My mom had two of them, I got one older brother who liked to tease me. Never did my hair though...:)
I think I'm more like you than your sister...my hair needs washing and I have on my old pair of jeans as usual.

Oh Nancy, we are never happy with our hair, right. I always wanted curls, mine is dead straight. My Mum always wanted me to have a fringe when I was a kid, but it just stuck straight out, eek! Still, she persisted, so I always looked a bit weird with a sticky-out fringe. Beautiful pics on previous post, the Dogwood is just beautiful. People do terrible things, don't they.
Have a great weekend.
Hugs, Coll :-}

You are so lucky to have a sister and to have curly hair…
I have thin straight hair , I used to braid it every night when I was a teen so that it be wavy and curly the next day…
In fact, my husband thought that I had naturally curly hair when we started to date; it was months before he realized that my hair was really straight as a nail….I perm now….
