Missing an Old Friend

Photo © Fete et Fleur Designs

Today I heard that Mary Engelbreit will be closing the doors of her magazine publication. While I never subscribed to this magazine, I was sad at the news. I know that she and her staff put themselves wholeheartedly into this publication and I mourned for them. A few weeks ago it was Country Homes closing its doors.

This got me thinking about an old friend of mine who passed away years ago, Victoria Magazine. Do you remember her? The gorgeous photos and writings in this publication filled me with endless inspiration and peace. I had been faithful to Victoria even when I disagreed with some of the changes she made over the years. I miss her inspiration and above all the content found in her pages. I still pore over the old Victoria and let her photos and words fill my mind with beauty.

I know there is a new Victoria in town and while she is lovely in her own way, she will never be a replacement for my dear old friend.

Hi Nancy,
I am so sorry to hear about the ME Home Companion. I agree with you about the new Victoria, she is quite lovely... but old friends are the best. I still savor those old Victoria magazines that have been through many moves with my family. I get a "home" feeling each time I flip through that beautiful publication and much inspiration.

Hi Nancy,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been hearing rumblings that the magazine business is failing in this age of at-your-fingertips online literature.

I do love the experience of a new magazine: picking it out at the newsstand, sitting down with it and a good cup of tea, then opening it up and smelling that new mag smell.

I'll be sad if they all disappear.

I'm mourning about it too. Home Companion was one of my absolute favorite magazines. I've kept every issue, along with my old Victoria's, and I still enjoy going through them.

Sorry to hear about this. There are so many old lovely places that are closing their doors. SO sad. I guess it better to have had her images and words as long as you did than to never have had them at all.

Beautiful picture and words here Nancy.

that is sad...i did subscribe to the home companion earlier on when it was more focused on artists and less on country decor...and i hear you about the old victoria...i did subscribe for a year to the new one, i will not be renewing...i much preferred the old one too...i would spend hours pouring over the gorgeous pages and dreaming...the new version pales in comparison i think...

I heard about this. Here the press is having harsh times too. First they don't have adequate answers to people reading online (yet). Second the crisis, which hit your country first but has stroken our economy now too. Here the magazines are united in big publishers' firms. I don't know whether that helps. The future will tell.

I'm having the owoh give away on my blog right now. Please drop by, if you have a spare moment.

I absolutely love your blog ! So refreshing...I loved the old Victoria as well and as someone else stated I subscribed to the new one for a year and no more for me. It just isn't the same. I just adore beautiful magazines so this is more sad news.
Blessings!

So sad about Home Companion. I like the new Victoria but it's not the same as our dear old friend as you called her.

I have most of the back issues, yes, years of them! In fact I moved recently and it was a chore to cart all of those magazines to my new condo but they are old friends and I look at them often.
I could not bear to leave them behind when I moved!

ROFLOL!!! Okay, let me explain. I'm not laughing at your saddened grief over losing your ME mag as a BFF...it's the comment you left on my tatting giveaway... the comment:
"I've got a snowballs chance in _ _ _ _ as they say, but I have to try. "

OMGosh! P_ _ ed my pants!!! LOL!
You are too funny, friend. Thanks for the chuckle. ;)

Good luck to you on the giveaway!

I Loved and very much miss my dear old friend Victoria…
I am always amazed by the fact that when I revisit an old copy I still find new
Inspirations…
And love to read and reread many of the articles …
One of my favorites was about the button string made by single Victorian girls…
I always looked forward to the January copy with winter whites, June and blue,
as well as the beautiful autumn issues.

I am also sad to see HC go, I remember how happy I was when the first issue came out and
had a page of paper dolls …

Wow!That's the first I heard about Home Companion. I've have subscribed forever! I hadn't been to pleased about some of the recent changes but stuck with it nonetheless. I used to receive the original Victoria and remember vividly when I saw the premier issue, while on a break at work, at the corner store. Still have it. I was so excited! I realise things are always changing I wish some things could stay the same. When we moved the one great comfort was that my dear subscriptions would follow me here, like old friends.

On Victoria - my sentiments exactly. As for ME - I'm too choked up to think about it! It has been my favorite for some time.

The publishing industry is being hit hard right now. I am sad to see quality publications go by the way side too.

Beautifully put... I too miss the old Victoria, the new one just isn't the same... And ME was the closest we had to something new and artistic in Victorias wane so that too is a real loss. Our current economic upheaval continues to leave cracks in its wake...
