The Love of Fine Things

It was my Mother who first introduced me to antiquing. It was at her side that I learned the love of fine things. I was the tender age of 12 when she opened her antique shop in our quaint little downtown.

She spent many weekends after that looking for beautiful items to sell. I was her constant companion on those outings. We rose before dawn to treasure hunt, driving off to faraway flea markets. If there were no flea markets to go to, we would go to tag sales in our city and surrounding areas. I didn’t always appreciate these outings and would sometimes dread our antiquing weekends, but being with my Mom made up for those crazy early mornings.

My mother is a strong woman, she's had to be. She's had many people in life let her down. And while most people might lose hope, she is still a dreamer.

Happy Mother's Day to you beautiful Mother of my heart.

And a very Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms.
You give us the greatest hope for the future.

Beautiful post! Wish my mom was still around so I could honor her too....I always wear some of her jewelry on Mother's day as my tribute to her, and it makes me feel closer to her. Hope you have a lovely one!

Nancy, you have the most beautiful posts with the most amazing photos...it is always such a joy to visit over here...i actually sparked my own mother's interest in things that are old...and i got the love from my hubby...he came to our marriage with a little collection of old things...and we spent a lot of time together on the hunt for antiques when we were first married...

Oh how I remember the fun of going to the house to see what she had bought that weekend....your brother and I still have fond memories of those tag sales and benefiting from some of her sales when we got married. I remembering having a rubber boy doll as a child, but had lost it; she had a similar doll in her shop and I squealed with delight when I saw "George" sitting on her shelf....she kindly gave it to be. I wasn't even her daughter-in-law yet, but she was always so good to me and still is. How I miss those days.

Lovely post dearest one! Anita

What a lovely story! I also grew up antiquing with my mother. We would hit all the garage sales in the city on Saturdays and then I would go with my father to the fleamarket on Sundays to sell them. Like you, I'm glad that I learned to appreciate fine things at a young age.

Nancy,
Your post truly resonated with me. My Mother also introduced me to antiquing, and I used to accompany her to our local fela market and and auction here and there. I remember when she opened her first booth and allowed me to sell a few things. I lost my Mother several years ago but I thank her for the appreciation of all sorts of beauty. Thank you for this wonderful post and for the happy memories. Laura

Lovely post Nancy...your photos are always heavenly to come by and see.
I now find myself wishing for a daughter more than ever as I see my mom grow so old and know that relationship will come to an end, saddens me so.
Can't let it get me down though, have much to be thankful for!
