Tuft Love

Here I sit . . . typing away . . . deleting . . . re-typing . . .

Do any of you go through this when you're creating a new post?

I've wanted to write on this topic for a while, so here goes . . .

I have a confession to make: I'm in love with tufts. (Or should I say tufted, or tuftedness? Is the last one a word?)

I don’t know when it happened. It sort of snuck up on me and I found myself dreaming of fluff filled pillows with pretty little satin buttons.

What are tufts, tufted, tuftedness, you ask? (I did make the last word up myself.)

According to the dictionary, "to tuft" is "to draw together (a cushion or the like) by passing a thread through at regular intervals, the depressions thus produced being usually ornamented with tufts or buttons."

I'm fascinated by the undulating surface of a tufted pillow. On that note, enter this vintage sewing basket.

It was falling apart, but there was a tufted pad inside calling out to me, saying, "Wouldn’t I be amazing as a display for something wonderful?"

I carefully pulled apart the satin lining and was able to salvage the tattered pad.

Yes, I can see that anything displayed on this sumptuous miniature pad would look even more beautiful.

How about an antique millinery rose?

Bonjour ma chere! Oh, tufts. I used to watch my father when I was very young and he was an upholsterer. I would effortlessly make tufts for French antique furniture with the most beautiful damask fabrics. Even back then, I was in wonder of his craft and never quite understood how he did it. Beautiful photos! I hope you are much better...Anita

Hi Nancy...the tuft is lovely and I understand your attraction. I, adore the basket...the basket weave, the straw! I have a collection of old sewing baskets...will have to share those with you some day! Looking forward to more tuft love!

What a beautiful tuft, the old rose looks lovely on it. I also like the basket and look forward to seeing it lined with a tuft designed by you.

I too Love tufts! But I have to say it is a difficult thing to do, one year my mother and I upholstered an entire twin bed, the headboard, footboard and side pieces, and then we tufted the entire thing, a pink tufted bed!! It took us an entire week but I have to say it was worth it, I think you would like it!!!! Good luck with your tufting, use a solid fabric, it makes life easier!

Yes, I can see the exquisite beauty in the tufted cushion. It reminds me of pillows that were on the formal living room sofa in the home where I grew up. They were made of velvet, two were honey gold and the other one was an olive green. I used to sneak them from the room and pretend that they were sumptuous Barbie beds. I am sure your new basket lining will be wonderful. Have fun tufting!

Happy New Year dear Nancy!

I share your tuft love immediately. The beauty of this tuft is enhanced by it's fabric, that is simply gorgeous, exactly the right shade of pink and the right degree of tatteredness (I hope this is an English word that you understand too)! Good luck tufting a new lining for your basket! Have a great weekend!
PS I hope that you are feeling well again, I thought I was recovered last week, but spent this week ill too :-(

Oh, that had to be a "tuft" decision to pull that lining out of a beautiful old box. ;)

Good luck with your own tufting project - I'm sure there are books out there on how to do it.

Happy New Year!

Hugs,

Kate
