Ocean Treasures

I love the ocean. My earliest and happiest memories are of the beach. My family was always the happiest there. Almost every weekend we would make our hour long trek down to the coast and spend the entire day and sometimes the entire weekend on the beach. The furthest I've ever lived from the ocean is an hour.

When I was in my early twenties, I had an opportunity to go to Arizona and sing with a worship team I was on. We packed up and headed East for a long weekend. It was beautiful there, but by evening time I was restless and uncomfortable. We were having a lovely dinner outside underneath a gorgeous Arizona sky, when I realized what was wrong . . . I couldn't feel the ocean. I felt closed in and while the sky went on forever in it's beauty, I felt like it was closing in on me. I don't really understand it, but I seem to know when I'm far from the ocean. And I don't like it. Kinda weird, huh?

This last weekend we took a long walk on the beach. I live only thirty minutes away from the coast now. I couldn't believe the amount of debris washing up from the Pacific. There was driftwood everywhere. I wish I had brought my camera. People had built charming archways and shelters out of it.

I collected shells as we walked along. This plate holds all the treasures I found.

I love the pearlescent colors of these shells. I wrote about the formation of Nacre (Mother of Pearl) here.

The macro photo of this tiny barnacle makes it look like an exquisite miniature vase.

The cobalt blue sea glass is stunning against the green. I've never found sea glass before, it was a thrill to find it.

oh what lovely treasures you found Nancy!
I love that gorgeous vase barnacle :)
I totally understand you and your need to be near the ocean. I feel right at home every time I visit my parents' beach house, and plan to retire there one day. While I don't consider myself living near the beach now, I'm only 20 mins from it, Melbourne is a bay city. Turns out almost all of the capital cities in Aust are on the coast. Guess we like it there... lol!

Lovely post. I love to be near the ocean too. It has a magnetic power over me and I always feel best when I am at the ocean.

You found some beautiful sea glass. I love looking for shells and glass at the beach. My sister and I make simple necklaces out of the glass when we find pretty pieces.

Your photos are wonderful, they capture the ocean's treasures beautifully.

God makes the most magnificent jewelry!
Beautiful post. I love the ocean too. I think for me, my nature love tie is to trees. I grew up in Raleigh, NC, in a neighborhood full of great old trees. I miss them so much when I'm in a tree-less place.

The wonders of nature are amazing arent they? I dont find your feeling closed in to be odd... the complete opposite as a matter of fact...

when I learned to drive my first car I would go down this one street that wound its way like a snake with lots of hills and dips... it had an enormous amount of trees overhead... and though I loved its beauty and the relief from the sun I felt closed in... I never understood at that time what it was all about .... not sure I do now either... but I do understand why you feel as you do...

The ocean is a favorite for me.... and the little sea treasures one can find are so exciting...

Love all the pearlescent shells and sea glass... lovely post

LOTS OF HUGS

I was brought up near the ocean and sea. I adore all the treasures from sea and ocean. The smell of the sea, the depths of the ocean. Life is beautiful, is it not? xx

I too love the beach. There is nothing more beautiful than miles of sand with foamy waves curling!

Good morning dearest...I have a load of this beach glass when we lived in Mass. right across the street from the ocean. It was such a pleasure to go to the beach with Mr. B. after work and hunt for these treasures. My favorite color of course is the sky blue....I must bring this out and set it out in a bowl...the memories are worth even more that the beauty of the glass....Anita

I grew up in the beach community I know live and I promised myself I'll never leave again.
Unfortunately, I have never found seaglass and have resorted to purchasing it whenever I find it at thrift stores. It's not as exciting as finding it on your own.
How lovely the treasures you picked up from the sea.

I adore your treasures from the sea. I love the sounds that only the sea can make and the smell of salt in the air.

It's great that you get to use your singing talent!! I remember your sweet voice.

I know about missing the ocean.
But I carry her inside.
Thankfully.
